Surveyors – Join our community

Passionate about Surveying? Share it.

There are many ways you can help youth get excited about surveying. You can give a presentation at your local school, host a work experience student, or even just talk to people about surveying wherever possible.

It cannot be emphasised enough how big an impact a surveyor can have when discussing the profession with young people. Surveyor Karen Thompson found this out herself when she and some of her fellow Landteam colleagues visited Illawarra Sports High School.

Hi Karen,

Just a quick note to convey our very sincere gratitude to you and some of the Landteam team for your willingness to be involved with our schools ‘Conversations With Industry’ careers event. We are incredibly grateful to you all for your kindness and generosity in supporting this activity.

Our school placed a lot of importance into this event because we understand how helpful it can be in assisting our young people to become more confident and knowledgeable about their future careers choices. Our students are no doubt much richer for the experience, and your support will no doubt assist them as they move towards entering the world of work. We thank you all for your participation and the knowledge and hints that you imparted to our students.

Many of the students have seen me since the talks commenting about how useful they thought the event was, and how beneficial it was to have the opportunity to talk with the guests on the small group basis. It was clear that they understood the value of gaining an insight into various careers before they formally enter into various training pathways and, or the labour market. I know they value the very real contribution that you all have made to their lives.

Thanks again for your support and interest in our students.

Karen’s not the only surveyor pitching in. Ian Iredale has been running New South Wales’ Maths in Surveying Days since 2007 – in this 2019 video, filmed at the Women In Surveying Day lunch, Ian talks about the impact surveying events can have on students.

Promoting your profession

We’re also encouraging surveying professionals to back the Surveying – A Life Without Limits brand on social media platforms.

By establishing an Instagram account and posting images of interesting aspects of surveying life, you can help promote the surveying lifestyle and career path to people currently outside of this community. To convey the power and promise of a surveying career, we find that some of the best things surveyors and surveying firms could post include:

  • Exciting surveying projects
  • Pictures of surveyors on the job
  • Surveying technology especially emerging tools and technology
  • Job opportunities at your firm
  • Day in the life of work experience students, graduate surveyors and more
  • Important events such as the registration of a newly licensed surveyor

The following hashtags are useful tools when posting on social media sites, particularly Instagram. These are associated with the Surveying, A Life Without Limits brand:

  • #trysurveying

  • #surveyingcareers
  • #landsurveying
