Maths in Surveying Day – New South Wales

School students are discovering the real world application of maths

The Maths in Surveying STEM excursions for high school students will soon return to Bicentennial Park, Homebush Bay. Current events are suspended until further notice and the coronavirus pandemic has passed.

This exciting event started 13 years ago. Drawing on cutting edge surveying technology, students will be challenged to a series of surveying problems.

This is also a unique chance for them to engage with measurements, surveying and trigonometry.

Running all day, these Maths in Surveying Days are a collaboration between maths teachers and surveyors, offering Year 10 (5.3) maths students the chance to explore their studies within a surveying framework. It is thanks to the sponsorship of the Institution of Surveyors NSW and the NSW Surveying Task Force – not to mention the volunteer work of 30 surveyors, teachers and student maths teachers at each event – that allows these events to go ahead. For schools, this is a free event – the only costs to consider are transporting students to the park and the printed set of worksheets for each student.

Students that love maths and the outdoors are certain to enjoy the Maths in Surveying Day. They may even discover whether this unique profession might be the right one for them…
