Videos About Surveying

There are plenty of perspectives on surveying out there!

Throughout the year there are a lot of surveying events and career expos. Sometimes, there’s someone there with a camera, ready to talk about surveying – and that’s where this page comes in. It’s a resource for you learn more about what surveying means to different people from different walks of life.

Here you will find interviews with surveyors, students, educators and teachers; videos going into the ins and outs of surveying as a profession; instances of surveying appearing on the news; and more.

We will continue to post more videos on this page as they come to hand, so don’t forget to check back periodically.

Surveying with Evan Webster

For a new four-part video series, Webster Survey Group’s Evan Webster showed us what he and his assistant surveyor Tom Chan get up to during a day on the job. You can read more about the videos and watch the full series here. The first video is viewable below.

Surveying interviews with experts, students and lecturers

You can look at the surveying profession from a lot of different perspectives. Our ongoing video interview series features everyone from long-time surveyors to teaching professionals, work experience students and young people who are just starting their surveying studies.

RMIT Experience Surveying Day

From October 2019, the RMIT Experience Surveying Day – a unique chance for students to explore the technology of surveying in an exciting and fun one hour intensive – found itself a new home in a mere 13 minute walk from the Melbourne CBD. To mark the refreshed event, we filmed some video interviews that dig into what the days are all about. The first one is viewable below, or you can catch the full series here.

What’s it like to study an Advanced Diploma?

There are plenty of ways into the surveying profession. This informative interview with RMIT University student Lucas showcases what surveying studying is like, how the practical element is incorporated, and demonstrates some of the pathways that lie waiting in the industry after graduation.

Drones and surveying at North Metro TAFE

Surveying technology has come a long way since the days of the pyramids. Today, the surveyor tool kit includes everything from GPS to scanners to total stations. This technology can be incredibly powerful and in this video Martin Robinson at North Metro TAFE in Western Australia outlines some of the opportunities that his students get to work with this technology. In this instance, they’re flying drones to capture imagery that will be utilised to produce a digital twin of the survey site.

SISP Industry Partners

In August 2019, students from Muswellbrook High School got the chance to explore surveying and STEM fundamentals as part of a day of drones, maths and measurements. Bengalla Mining Company team members dug into sustainable mining and rehabilitation with the students. It was for the NSW Department of Education’s Muswellbrook Academy of STEM Excellence (MASE), part of a STEM Industry School Partnership Program (SISP) which will bring applied mathematics and airborne drone flights to students. Keep your ear out for more events to come.

Women in Surveying Day 2019 Videos

One of the biggest 2019 surveying events was the Women in Surveying Day. Held in March as part of NSW Women’s Week, female surveying students from around the state descended on Hyde Park for the chance to discover more about surveying as a profession, take part in maths in surveying activities, and meet important figures like the NSW Surveyor General Narelle Underwood and the Governor of New South Wales, David Hurley.

Watch the first video from the day below, or explore the full video series here.
