Thinking of Becoming a Land Surveyor? Here’s What You Need to Know

November 3, 2023Kim Hesse

Land surveying is a profession that combines elements of science, technology, and a deep connection to the land. It’s a field that plays a crucial role in property management, construction, infrastructure development, and more. If you’re considering a career as a land surveyor, here’s what you need to know to help you make an informed decision.

Educational Requirements

To embark on a career as a land surveyor, you’ll need a solid educational foundation. Typically, this involves obtaining a bachelor’s degree in surveying, geomatics, or a related field. In some cases, an associate degree or a certificate program in land surveying may suffice to start as an assistant land surveyor, but to become licensed, a four-year degree is usually required.

State Licensure

One of the most critical aspects of becoming a land surveyor is obtaining a state license. Licensure requirements vary from state to state, but they typically include passing the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam, gaining a certain amount of work experience under the supervision of a licensed surveyor, and passing the Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exam. Licensing demonstrates your competence and ability to provide professional surveying services.

On-the-Job Training

Before becoming a licensed surveyor, most individuals start as assistant land surveyors. This is an invaluable learning experience where you gain hands-on knowledge of fieldwork, data collection, and the use of surveying equipment. It’s during this phase that you’ll work closely with licensed surveyors and learn the practical aspects of the profession.

Technological Skills

Modern land surveying relies heavily on technology. Aspiring surveyors should familiarize themselves with Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and specialized software for surveying. These tools are used for data collection, mapping, and analysis, and proficiency in using them is an asset.

Physical Demands

Land surveying often involves working outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. It can also be physically demanding, as it may require lifting heavy equipment, walking long distances, and working in remote or challenging terrain. Being in good physical condition is important for success in this field.

Attention to Detail

Precision and accuracy are the cornerstones of land surveying. You must have a keen eye for detail and a methodical approach to ensure that survey data is reliable and error-free.

Career Opportunities

A career in land surveying offers various career paths, including working for private surveying firms, government agencies, construction companies, or as a self-employed surveyor. With experience and expertise, you can also specialize in areas like boundary surveying, geodetic surveying, or construction layout.

In conclusion, a career in land surveying can be rewarding and intellectually stimulating. If you have an interest in the land, a knack for problem-solving, and the dedication to meet the educational and licensing requirements, this profession may be an excellent fit for you. Land surveyors play a crucial role in shaping our communities and ensuring the accurate delineation of property boundaries, making it a respected and vital profession.
