What inspired you to become a surveyor?

I was interested in a few different types of engineering and ended up choosing surveying after hearing all about it at a UNSW Open Day. What appealed to me most was the focus on maths and the mixture of both outdoor and indoor work.

What does a typical day at work involve?

A typical day at work involves either going out into the field to do engineering or control surveys or in the office calculating results and drawing up plans from previous surveys. The work we do at Sydney Trains is to maintain the survey control network in the railway corridor, or perform engineering surveys which are used to support the design and construction phases of projects to upgrade or maintain railway infrastructure.

Tell us about your most interesting surveying project?

My most interesting project at university was my undergraduate thesis, which explored flood mapping using satellite radar imagery. I really enjoyed both the research in radar imaging as well as the mapping component and producing results which could be compared both visually and quantitatively using geographic information systems (GIS).

The main aim of the study was to determine the achievable accuracy of flood mapping using remote sensing data (satellite radar imagery, optical imagery and LiDAR digital surface model) in urban areas compared with rural areas and report on the use of remote sensing data for flood prediction modelling.

What are the most challenging aspects of surveying?

One of the most challenging aspects of surveying is making sure that your data is reliable. Survey data is critical information when it comes to design, construction, land boundary location and more, therefore it is important to perform sufficient checks in order to be confident that the data or product provided is reliable and quoted the correct accuracy. Another challenging aspect of surveying is keeping up with changes in technology and making use of new technology that becomes available.

Are you considering registration and how would this benefit your career?

Yes I am planning on doing my first couple of exams for registration, Town Planning and Engineering, in the next year.

What would you say to encourage a young person to consider a career in surveying?

If you enjoy maths, working outdoors and solving problems then you should give surveying a go. There is a shortage of surveyors in Australia so it is a career with foreseeable job security. It is a rewarding job where you get to see an end result, whether it be setting out for construction, planning a new subdivision or finalising a deposited plan.

What appeals to you as a female working in the profession?

The same things that appeal to guys I think: it is a job which involves work both outdoors and in an office and no two jobs are the same so there are always new challenges. The field of GIS, closely linked with surveying, is also interesting for girls who are interested in the maths and mapping, but less interested in fieldwork.

What locations have you worked in?

I have worked in Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong.

What do you love the most about your career?

I love getting to work in different places for every different job that comes up. I like applied maths, having to solve problems and coming up with an end result. Another great aspect of the job is working in teams as jobs often involve going out to do surveys in crews of two or more people.
