Making the most of surveying work experience

With so many options facing school students as they decide what they would like to specialise in after they finish school, work experience can be a terrific way to help them make some important decisions about their future.

One such student is Coedie Anderson. While studying as a year 10 pupil at St Joseph’s College Hunter Hill, Coedie seized the opportunity to undertake surveying work experience – and now that it’s done, he is already keen to start his tertiary study in the area!

Read on to find out a little about his experience…

Q: Which surveying company did you undertake work experience with?

A: Linker Surveying.

Q: Who was your work experience supervisor?

A: Mark Andrew.

Q: What did you learn on work experience?

A: I was able to help with setting up measuring equipment. I was able to assist rather than watch others doing this. As we set up I learnt so much, everything was explained to me. At every step the staff were teaching me how to do the tasks. Mostly the projects were measuring buildings and roadways.

Q: What was the most interesting part of work experience?

A: The most interesting project was surveying an old church for a renovation project. It was interesting because the building was a complicated design, there were interesting roof angles, unusual room and basement spaces making for difficult measurements.

Q: Would you consider a career in surveying?

A: Yes. My first interest is in civil engineering because I am interested in the design aspect. I will probably do the combined civil / surveying degree at UNSW.

Q: Why?

A: I am interested in the technical skills in engineering and surveying. I am learning about dynamics and kinematics in Physics now and these are things I am interested in.

Q: Would you recommend this work experience to other students?

A: Yes, I would recommend work experience in surveying. It helps you work out what you want to do for a job. The experience taught me good skills and I learnt about technical things I would not otherwise know about.
