Announcing the winner of the win a drone competition!

The Australian Grand Prix is not necessarily the first place you’d think to go to if you wanted to learn about the fascinating technology that surveyors and geospatial scientists use in their day-to-day jobs. However, the 2018 Grand Prix hosted an Industry and Innovation Precinct.

This precinct highlighted many of the Victorian businesses that fuel the automotive, aviation, manufacturing and defence industries. Respected surveying and geospatial science company Taylors had a stand at the precinct and invited us to attend – you can read all about the day here – and as part of the fun, we gave students the chance to win their own drone.

A winner is crowned

We were thrilled to receive a lot of thoughtful responses to the competition question, “In 25 words or less, what have you learnt about geospatial science and surveying technology today?”. Clearly the activities that students took part in at the precinct were inspiring.

In the end, the judges have decided to award Kieren W for his entry…

“3D laser scanning is used to make models and accurately map things and distances… and it’s very cool!”

Congratulations to Kieren! We’re happy to report that the drone has made it to him safe and sound, as his father Scott can attest…

“Kieren just wants to say thank you to all those involved in the ‘Try Surveying… A Life Without Limits’ competition. Loves his wicked new drone. He really enjoyed his Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend and this just topped it off! Thank you very, very much.”

To all the other students who took the time to enter, thank you so much for engaging with the material. Of course, this can just be the beginning of your time exploring this industry…
