Why Victoria Needs More Surveyors – And Why It’s a Career Worth Considering

August 29, 2025Kim Hesse

When you look around Victoria, it’s hard to miss the signs of growth. From new housing estates and infrastructure projects to renewable energy developments and environmental protection efforts, our state is constantly evolving. Behind much of this progress is one profession that doesn’t always get the spotlight it deserves: surveying.

The Shortage of Surveyors in Victoria

Right now, Victoria is facing a critical shortage of licensed and graduate surveyors. Demand is outpacing supply, driven by:

  • Major infrastructure projects such as the Metro Tunnel, North East Link, and Suburban Rail Loop.
  • Urban expansion with new housing estates and subdivisions required to meet population growth.
  • Land management and sustainability projects, where surveyors play a vital role in protecting the environment and planning smarter cities.

Put simply: there aren’t enough qualified surveyors to meet Victoria’s needs, and this gap is only widening.

Job Security and High Earning Potential

For anyone considering their future career, this shortage presents an enormous opportunity. Surveying is one of the few professions where graduates can step straight into secure, well-paid work. In fact, surveyors are consistently among the highest-earning graduates in Australia.

  • High starting salaries: Surveying graduates often earn more than peers in many other professions straight out of university.
  • Long-term career growth: With pathways to become a Licensed Surveyor, the earning potential and professional recognition only increase.
  • Job security: With Victoria’s ongoing demand for land development and infrastructure, surveyors are unlikely to face downturns in demand.

A Career with Purpose

Beyond job security and pay, surveying offers the chance to be part of shaping the future of Victoria. Surveyors help plan liveable communities, deliver projects that keep the state moving, and ensure land is measured and managed responsibly for generations to come.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a career that combines excellent earning potential, strong job security, and the opportunity to make a real impact, surveying should be at the top of your list. With the shortage of professionals in Victoria, now is the perfect time to enter the field.
