Melbourne has NFL fever!
This week, the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers are taking over the Melbourne Cricket Ground for a historic sporting moment – the first NFL regular-season game ever played in Australia.
But before the players can run onto the field, there’s been an enormous job happening behind the scenes.
Turning one of Australia’s most iconic cricket and AFL grounds into an NFL stadium isn’t as simple as changing the goalposts and painting a few new lines.
It requires planning, positioning, measurement and plenty of precision.
Sound familiar?
From AFL oval to NFL gridiron
The MCG is designed around a huge oval playing surface. An NFL field, on the other hand, is a precisely defined rectangle – 100 yards between the goal lines, with two 10-yard end zones, as well as yard lines, sidelines, hash marks and goalposts that all need to be positioned correctly.
Preparing the MCG for the game has been a massive undertaking, with around 18 months of planning involved in transforming the venue to meet NFL requirements.
The changes extend well beyond the playing surface, too. The stadium has required modifications to locker rooms, broadcasting facilities, player areas, technology and other infrastructure, while NFL goalposts and additional screens have also been installed.
And after all that? The MCG needs to be transformed back again!
So where does surveying come in?
While we can’t claim that surveyors were responsible for setting out this particular NFL field, the challenge provides a great example of something surveyors understand better than most:
When location and dimensions matter, accuracy matters.
Surveyors use sophisticated technology to establish exactly where things need to go – often down to millimetres.
Using tools such as GNSS, total stations, laser scanners, drones and digital mapping, surveyors capture measurements, establish positions and create accurate spatial information that helps turn plans on a screen into something real on the ground.
Whether that’s determining a property boundary, setting out a new building, positioning major infrastructure or capturing a detailed 3D model of an existing site, the principle is the same:
Measure it. Position it. Get it right.
Surveying behind the big events
There’s another surveying connection that’s easy to overlook.
Major events don’t happen in isolation.
Think about everything surrounding an event of this scale – stadiums, roads, railways, pedestrian areas, drainage, utilities, telecommunications and public spaces.
Surveyors play an important role throughout the planning, construction and ongoing management of the infrastructure that allows cities like Melbourne to host major international events.
Long before the crowds arrive, spatial professionals have helped measure, map, design and build the city around them.
When every metre matters
When the Rams and 49ers take to the MCG, most people will be watching the quarterbacks, tackles and touchdowns.
We might be looking at something slightly different.
Because underneath the spectacle is a pretty great reminder of the importance of measurement, accuracy and spatial thinking.
From a new subdivision to a skyscraper, a railway line – or even transforming the MCG into an NFL field – getting the right result starts with knowing exactly where you are and exactly where everything needs to go.
And that’s something surveyors know a thing or two about.
So, what does surveying have to do with the NFL?
Maybe more than you thought!
