How can I become a Land Surveyor?

Are you thinking of becoming a land surveyor but don’t know where to begin or which study pathway to take?

There are a wide array of positions that you can step into that fall under the banner of land surveying.

Let’s break down the qualifications.

Professional Training Agreement

This runs three to five years in length depending on how you decide to structure it, can lead to becoming a licensed surveyor. The status of licensed surveyor is the pinnacle of the field of land surveying, and as such many strive to attain this title.

Undergraduate degree – or an undergraduate degree coupled with a postgraduate follow-up

This will take approximately four to five years, and will see you leave a graduate surveyor, ready to go on the hunt for surveying jobs.

Advanced diploma

This can see you working as a survey assistant in one year, and a diploma may lead to a position as a survey technician. These roles are very important in the surveying industry, and can be the perfect stepping stones to work as a land surveyor.

Certificate IV

One short cut you can take into the land surveying arena is a Certificate IV. It will take you half a year, and upon successful completion you will be set to work as a survey assistant.

No matter whichever of the surveying courses open to you you choose, there are always options to go back and continue your studies to attain that next goal.
